USD 457 school board approves HVAC project

HVAC Expert April 29, 2022

During its April 25 meeting, the Garden City Public Schools Board of Education authorized a $17.57 million project to improve the ESCO HVAC systems in several buildings, and an updated long-range facilities plan.

The Board approved Honeywell for the project that includes 14 buildings of lighting upgrades, five buildings of HVAC upgrades and Honeywell Forge Monitoring Software.

In other business, no action was taken regarding the open board seat and a proposal for a superintendent transition report. The board also listened to a presentation about new math and foreign language curriculum proposed for next year but took no action. However, the board approved social studies textbook for the next school year.

Student/Staff Recognition

Students and staff recognized during the meeting included:

  • Audrey Norquest, Garden City High School, who took 1st place gold winner and a national qualifier at the state FCCLA Competition
  • Vivian Lara, GCHS, who received an Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship
  • Mitzi Sanchez and Camyrn Kottas, GCHS, who are Kansas Career and Technical Education Scholars
  • Sarah Shrimplin, Edith Scheuerman Elementary School, and Jane Schneider, GCHS, who were nominated as Region I Kansas Teacher of the Year

The board approved the following items during the meeting:

  • Purchase of two ¾ ton pickup trucks from Western Motor Company in the amount of $79,708.00
  • Rubrik Upgrade at GCHS from ProActive Solutions, Inc. in the amount of $24,639.00
  • Large kitchen equipment from Sunflower Restaurant in the amount of $18,672.00
  • The 2022-23 ESSER Plan
  • Intermediate Encore Adoption, Project Lead the Way, grades 5-6
  • A course name change from Unified Science to Stem Lab for grades 5-6
  • A course name change from Computer Keyboarding to Computer Sciences for grades 5-6

The next meeting of the Board of Education is 6 p.m. May 9 in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming St.
