A section of Kilmullen Lane is to be removed as part of repairs to the road following a kerosene fuel oil spill which emanated from Newcastle Hospital.
llr Gerry Walsh (FF) asked for an update on repair work at Kilmullen Lane in Kilcoole during the Greystones Municipal District meeting in January.
He said he knew repair work had begun but had been advised there was still evidence of an oil leak in the area.
District Engineer Ruairi O’Hanlon said he was aware the lane was closed due to oil coming through the road from a fuel oil leak from Newcastle Hospital.
He said a drain with a catch drain will be installed along the road to collect remaining fuel oil. This drain would be regularly maintained.
Once the drain is installed, the contractor will remove approximately 500m of roadway and then rebuild it.
“It’s a costly project not to notice a leak,” said Mr. O’Hanlon.
He confirmed that the contaminated section of road would be removed and disposed of by a specialist company.
