With a shortage of qualified technicians looming large over the HVAC industry, HVAC contractor D&H Air Conditioning (https://dandhac.com) created a no-cost apprenticeship program for job seekers in the Tucson metro.
TUCSON, Ariz., April 14, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — HVAC contractor D&H Air Conditioning just released H.E.A.T., an intensive apprenticeship offered at no cost to job seekers in the Tucson metro to fast-track them to a job in the HVAC industry.
With temperatures in Southern Arizona already reaching the 90-degree range this year, HVAC contractor D&H Air Conditioning had to staff up earlier in the season to cover a spike in service calls.
But after 2 years of lockdowns, travel restrictions and labor attrition, the local pool of available labor has shrunk significantly. Hiring qualified HVAC technicians through usual channels has become more difficult.
To answer the challenge, the executive team at D&H revisited an old, proven recipe: onboard job seekers with basic qualifications into an HVAC apprenticeship program, with the prospect of a job under a master technician at the conclusion of a 90-day intensive training period.
According to Phil Robles, General Manager of D&H AC, “Our new H.E.A.T. Program utilizes our in-house training center, which was also designed to train our current technicians on the latest air conditioning systems and best customer service practices.”
H.E.A.T. — which stands for HVAC Education And Training — is entirely delivered at D&H AC’s corporate headquarters in Tucson, under the supervision of expert instructors with a proven track record in the HVAC industry.
“H.E.A.T. is not a traditional HVAC training curriculum,” explains Melissa Cordero, Marketing Coordinator at D&H AC. “Our program lasts 90 days, and is totally hands-on. Students train directly on several types of operable air conditioning units, furnaces, and heat pumps. They learn from the best professors: technicians, installers and managers with field experience, who are able to transmit a wealth of real-life information on how to service and repair the complex air conditioning systems of today.”
With this new apprenticeship program, D&H hopes to help a number of young people start a technical career in the HVAC industry, where entry-level salaries compare favorably with career wages paid in other trades.
“D&H does not sell access to this program. We give access. We select participants based on their attitudes and desire to work in HVAC,” says Frank, the Supervisor of the H.E.A.T. Program. “And D&H may offer them a job upon successful completion of their training.”
The air conditioning company created a form on their website for applicants to initiate the selection process. The applications making the cut are contacted by the H.E.A.T. program supervisor for a one-on-one meeting. A committee then considers, selects, and retains the best candidates.
