Habitat for Humanity of Lapeer-Tuscola Press Release

Jan. 7, 2022

Habitat for Humanity of Lapeer-Tuscola announces it will have two meetings in February to kick off the 2022 Critical Home Repair Grant application process in Huron County. Last year 45 families took part in the program to do repairs to help them stay in their homes. Only the following types of repairs are allowed: new roofs, doors, windows, hot water tank, furnace, insulation, well and septic systems. The grant does not cover repairs to plumbing, electrical and basement or foundation work.

The meetings will be held at the Pigeon Library at 7236 Nitz St. in Pigeon Feb. 3 from 2-4 p.m. and then at the Franklin Inn in Bad Axe on Feb. 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for those who can’t make the first meeting. Eligible applicants must reside in Huron County and own their own home and the property the home sits on. Homes purchased with a land contract or in a mobile home park are not eligible for the grant.

During the meetings, Habitat staff will walk applicants through the paperwork needed. Any questions will be answered. Residents must live in Huron County and meet income requirements based on family size. Please bring drivers’ licenses, social security cards and a deed or title. Other meetings will be held in January and February for residents in Tuscola and Huron Counties.

“We’ve had pretty good results with our applications”, Housing Manager Ed Watteny said. “As long as you submit all the required paperwork and fit the income qualification guidelines and other parameters, you should be approved,” Watteny said. Getting paperwork in a timely manner is very important so Habitat recommends anyone thinking of applying to attend one of the Grant meetings Please check your local paper for more information.
