Carbon County will spend more than $1 million to replace an aging roof and HVAC system on its administration building.
On Thursday, the county commissioners approved a proposal from Weatherproofing Technologies Inc. of Beachwood, Ohio to replace the unit and HVAC equipment at a cost of $1,388,706.20. The price also includes a 20-year warranty on the roof.
Commissioner Rocky Ahner said that this project was scaled back from its original scope of work, which would have included a new facade and windows, bringing the project to an estimated $3 million; but with budget work in the process and prices going up, the county is looking to cut costs.
“We have to start making our priorities first,” Ahner said. “What it is that we need is the roof to not leak and we need air conditioning to work. That’s two basic things. … The other things are just going to have to come years down the road.”
The board said that the company will begin on the project in the spring with a completion date by the end of June.
The project will need some collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation because part of Route 209 will need to be shut down to bring in materials.
Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said doing the roof and HVAC system at the same time will be more effective since both need to be replaced.
