Arguably, one of the most important assets of Modern Heating Brantford Limited, beyond its wide range of products and services, is that co-owners Tom and Wanda Kirkby love Brantford — deeply so —- and are active community members.

Wanda says, “When we took over the business from Tom’s parents in the late 1980s, it was almost as if it was meant to be, both in terms of living in Brantford and providing home comfort solutions to local and regional customers. That feeling has only intensified over the decades.”

As such, the Kirkbys and their staff treat each customer’s home as if it were their own, carefully choosing and installing the appropriate air conditioners, furnaces, boilers, comfort controls and indoor air quality products — and then providing maintenance plans.

Today, the trust gained by Modern Heating over the years is more important than ever, as inflation skyrockets and energy efficiency has become a necessity. “People are aggressively wanting to lower their energy bills or at least keep a lid on costs,” Wanda says. “Fortunately we can help.”

The help comes in the form of upgrading outdated equipment (a big part of Modern Heating’s business) as well as installing systems specifically designed to maximize energy efficiency, such as heat recovery ventilator units and ductless heating/cooling systems. “We’re also happy to give second opinions about what homeowners need, because there are a lot of scams in our line of work,” Wanda says.

This degree of dedication to the HVAC trade — and to the overall wellbeing of Brantford — is a hallmark that is being maintained by the third generation of Kirkbys, namely Tom and Wanda’s daughters Tara and Megan and son-in-law Nathan. The transition of the company to the third generation of family ownership has been ongoing for several years now, but there’s a hitch — a good one.

Wanda explains, “We have a great staff and family who will do us proud when we decide to step down. However, that might take some time. We’ve made a lot of friends over the decades through school acquaintances and by participating and sponsoring local sports teams; many of them have become customers, and good word of mouth has allowed us to meet and serve other terrific people.”

“Put it this way: Tom and I try to take Fridays off, but a three day weekend is enough for us for the time being. We love doing what we do, so the transition will continue slowly!”
