The Archdiocese of New Orleans agreed to pay more than $1 million over allegations that it submitted false claims to FEMA for damages caused by Hurricane Katrina, according to a Justice Department news release.
The settlement resolves allegations that from 2007 through 2013 the archdiocese knowingly signed certifications for Federal Emergency Management Agency funding that contained false or fraudulent damage descriptions and repair estimates. The alleged false descriptions included purported damage to a nonexistent central air conditioning unit and misstated a facility’s square footage.
