With colder weather invading eastern Wisconsin last week and over the weekend, it’s the right time to get that home furnace checked.
John Pelnar is Service Department Manager at Schaus Mechanical in Manitowoc and he told us, “You definitely want to make sure you have a clean filter. You don’t want any restrictions to your furnace that are going to cause any overheating or malfunctions.”
Pelnar also advised homeowners to check those thermostats too.
“A lot of the thermostats nowadays are hardwired, but some of the older thermostats…are battery powered,” he explained. “You want to make sure the batteries are good in there too because a low battery will hinder your thermostat’s contacts from clicking.”
The home heating expert also spoke about the dangers of carbon monoxide, commonly referred to as the silent killer.
“Usually, when we do a furnace inspection, we will do a combustion analysis to make sure the parts-per-million levels are within the parameters they say,” he said. “That’s something major, and we can detect that pretty early.”
Pelnar said another safety precaution to keep in mind centers around those outside pvc pipes used for venting newer furnaces.
He explains homeowners should make sure the pipes aren’t blocked or covered by a snow or ice buildup that can prevent air from coming in and resulting in the loss of heat.
