Arbor Springs Elementary School was evacuated on Wednesday after a component in an HVAC unit burnt out, according to a letter from Principal Stephanie Golden.
When the component burnt out, it produced smoke in the school’s K-2 hall, Golden wrote in her letter to parents, setting off the fire alarm.
“Following our safety plan, the school was evacuated,” Golden wrote. “There appears to be no other damage other than to the HVAC unit and smoke, which particularly affected our K-2 classes, special ed and other nearby classrooms.”
The classes most affected by the smoke held an extended recess in the school’s gym.
According to Dean Jackson, public information officer for the Coweta County School System, there were no injuries from the incident.
Jackson reported that classes were delayed for around an hour, and lunch was interrupted.
In the letter, Golden thanked the staff and students for their “orderly response” to the fire alarm and the evacuation of the school, as well as the Coweta County Fire and Rescue for their quick response to the incident.
