Drivers across the UK could be hit with a £5,000 fine due to their air conditioning, due to a recently introduced rule in the Highway Code. The new rule could see drivers slapped with a hefty fine and points on their licence if they ignore the rule that states they must keep their car well-ventilated. A lack of air-conditioning could lead to drivers feeling drowsy behind the wheel and as a result being penalised.
Rule 237 of the code states: “Keep your vehicle well ventilated to avoid drowsiness. Be aware that the road surface may become soft or if it rains after a dry spell it may become slippery. These conditions could affect your steering and braking. If you are dazzled by bright sunlight, slow down and if necessary, stop.”
Breaking the Highway Code could see you landed with a £100 on-the-spot fine and three penalty points on your licence for careless driving if caught becoming drowsy while driving. If the incident were to go to court, the penalty could jump up to as much as a £5,000 fine, nine penalty points and even a driving ban.

Although some rules in the Highway Code can seem tedious and extreme, the Highway Code website explains that the courts decide how serious an incident is. It says: “Parliament sets the maximum penalties for road traffic offences. The seriousness of the offence is reflected in the maximum penalty. It is for the courts to decide what sentence to impose according to circumstances.”
Earlier this year changes were brought in to the Highway Code. The changes were implemented by the Department of Transport. Nine sections of the Highway Code, which contains advice and rules for people on Britain’s roads, were updated, with 50 rules added or amended.
People in cars, riding a motorcycle or cycling must give way to people on a zebra crossing and people walking and cycling on a parallel crossing. A parallel crossing is similar to a zebra crossing, but includes a cycle route alongside the black and white stripes.
