4 Common Furnace Problems in Lexington, KY

HVAC Expert December 22, 2022

In Lexington, KY, we rely on our furnaces to keep us warm all winter long. However, there are a few common furnace problems that can pop up from time to time. When the time comes to repair it, count on our Lexington furnace repair technicians to restore your heating. Here are some of the most common problems that we encounter in Lexington.

1. Squealing Noises

Squealing noises in furnaces are often caused by worn-out parts. The parts may need to be replaced or lubricated. If these parts are not repaired, the noises may worsen and lead to major problems in the furnace.

If you suspect you have a problem with your furnace, it is important to find out what the problem is and fix it as soon as possible.

The most common cause of squealing furnace noises is worn-out or damaged blower motor bearings.

Over time, the bearings can wear out due to the constant friction of the blower motor.

A faulty motor can result in poor heat distribution and a furnace shutting down prematurely.

Another common cause of squealing furnace noises is a faulty blower belt.

If the belt is worn or frayed, it may need to be replaced. It can also be loose or broken. If you find that you have a loose or broken belt, you should contact a licensed heating contractor near you.

2. Turning On and off Too Quickly

If your furnace turns on and off frequently, the thermostat may be broken or malfunctioning.

There are a number of potential causes for your thermostat’s malfunction.

The wiring may be outdated and require replacement, or it may require new batteries.

In addition, it could be the location of the thermostat. If your thermostat is placed close to a heat source, such as a heat register or direct sunlight, the temperature reading will be skewed, causing the thermostat to operate inconsistently.

Unless your thermostat simply requires new batteries, you will need to contact a local HVAC professional to replace outdated wiring or relocate your thermostat to a more suitable location.

3. Short-cycling

Short-cycling occurs when your furnace turns on and off rapidly, reducing its efficiency. This issue can be caused by various factors, including blocked air filters or missing airflow from the blower fan.

An experienced HVAC technician can inspect the system to identify the exact cause and recommend suitable solutions.

You could check your air filter. A clogged filter can choke off airflow and prevent proper operation.

A clean filter will allow the system to get the air it needs. You can get replacement filters from a hardware store, and they should be changed every 90 days.

A good rule of thumb is that your furnace should cycle about 3-8 times per hour. The length of the cycle depends on the outside temperature and the size of your home.

4. Broken Blower Motor

The blower motor is responsible for circulating air throughout the home, so if it becomes damaged or does not function properly, you may experience uneven heating and even no heat at all in some areas of your home.

Overheating and excess moisture could be the reasons why your blower motor fails.

When dust, dirt, and debris accumulate, it can accelerate the deterioration of windings and bearings.

Blower motors clogged with debris or saturated with moisture can fail due to overuse or electrical shorts.

When you have a broken blower motor, it’s best to call an HVAC professional near you to inspect and repair it if needed.
